Stage 1 Language for Travel & Fun (Integrated Learning)

Length: Semester or full year (students intending to study Stage 2 must complete a full year of Stage 1)

Recommended background: None (except a passion for language learning)

Content:

This course is designed to nurture your love of Asian culture and develop and extend the language skills needed for travel, with a focus on Indonesian or Japanese. There will be opportunities for you to explore areas of your own interest throughout the course. You will be encouraged to make connections with students from the two sister schools on your journey to become an informed global citizen. There may be an opportunity for an overseas school trip – this will be optional and at the student’s expense.

Assessment:

Practical exploration (possible assessment tasks):

  • Organise a trip to Japan or Indonesia (including cultural experiences and language)
  • Organise and facilitate the “Exploring Languages and Culture Day” with the primary schools

Language focused tasks:

  • Oral – language for travel-directions, shopping etc.
  • Analysis – of film or simple texts
  • Text production – brochure, online tourist guide site
  • Create a multi modal presentation about Port Lincoln for the sister schools including Zoom calls with sister schools

Connections (possible assessment tasks):

  • Acting as tour guide for our sister schools
  • Cultural awareness video including Zoom calls with sister schools

Personal Venture (possible assessment tasks):

  • Investigate a cultural or language area of interest – anime, art, food, media, environmental issue
