Content:
3D Design and Printing: This course introduces students to the complete design process, from identifying a need or problem through to creating and evaluating a finished product using 3D modelling and additive manufacturing technologies. Students will develop practical skills in computer-aided design (CAD), 3D printing, prototyping and testing while applying the principles of the design process to create purposeful solutions.
Throughout the course, students will investigate how digital technologies are used to solve real-world problems and will design, model and refine a range of products to meet specific criteria and constraints. Students will learn to use industry-standard software and equipment, gaining confidence in creating accurate digital models, preparing files for manufacture and evaluating the effectiveness of their designs.
The course emphasises creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration. Students will develop an understanding of the importance of iterative design by testing prototypes, analysing results and making informed improvements. Safe and responsible use of digital technologies, equipment and materials is an integral part of the program.
Aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (Version 9.0), this subject provides students with opportunities to develop technical skills while building the confidence to design innovative solutions for authentic purposes. By the end of the course, students will have produced a portfolio of original designs and 3D printed products that demonstrate their ability to apply digital technologies to solve practical challenges.
Assessment:
Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.
